California Mountains Facing Severe Flood Threat Due to Snow and Glacier Melting

Every year, there is a flood threat in the California mountains due to snow and glacier melting. However, this year, with an expected snowfall of over 76cm following last winter, farmers need to prepare for a higher flood risk. Environmental experts have explained that this year's flood threat is more severe than before because of the larger amount of melting snow and ice in the mountains. Therefore, there is a high possibility of floods occurring in major rivers and lakes in the region. Particularly, the areas around Tulare Lake, San Joaquin River, and Eastern Sierra lack sufficient water storage facilities, which could potentially cause damage to crops, residences, and infrastructure when the snow melts. For these reasons, farmers need to prepare for flood risks, and local residents should also pay attention to safety. Daniel Swain, a climatologist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), recently stated that "a tremendous amount of snow will soon melt" and that "this week could be a kind of 'exclamation point' in the warming process." As can be inferred from his remarks, this flood threat is also considered to be influenced by climate change. As climate change progresses, environmental disasters like this are happening all over the world. In this situation, we need to actively seek personal solutions and make efforts towards environmental protection and sustainable development.
